Wines of Italy
Italian Wines are ready available in the UK, but we are offering an exclusive selection that represents the "Other Italy" as well as Classic Italian wines. Italy is the country with the most varieties of grapes - there are over 40 indigeneous grapes and hence we should definitely explore this and look beyond Chianti, Montepulciano and Pinot Grigio.
If we look at the "bootshape" of Italy it starts with the fantastic wines in the north such as the pictured Gattinara in the odd shaped bottle, the 3 B's (Barolo (made from Nebbiolo), Barbera, Barbaresco) from Piedmont, followed by the classic outstanding Chianti from Vicchiomaggio in Tuscany all the way to the impressive wines from Sicily, such as the Cygnus from Tasca d'Almerita, an innovative blend of Nero D'Avola and Cabernet Sauvignon.
There are so many stories about Italian wines you could fill a whole web-site. On the picture here we are visiting Avignonesi which is located in Montepulciano,truly a great name in the Italian Wine industry. Ettore and Alberto Falvo have been crucial in putting Montepulciano on the map and the wines they produce the from their entry wine humbly called Rosso, the outstanding Vino Nobile and the special Desiderio a class apart. First of all they made sure to find the optimum way of the density the vineyards need to be planted, over 30 years they have fermented their grapes at different temperatures always finding the right one for the particular vintage. They also have reserved a plot where they plant an array of indigneoous grapes just to make sure they will not become extinct.
