Wines of France
France has everything when it comes to wine - classic regions such as Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne that have been making great wines for centuries as well as up and coming regions everywhere. Quality has improved dramatically over the last 10-20 years and many of the wines are now seriously good value for money, something that has not always been the case.
Many of the grape varieties that are now grown all over the world originate in France, whether it is Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Burgundy or Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Bordeaux. The French examples are in most cases still the yardstick by which everything else is measured and we have selected a range of classic wines that we think showcase the best of classic France.
This is not to discount the wines of Regional France where great variety and interest is to be found everywhere you look. Many regions are having a renaissance in recent years, such as the "black wine" of Cahors from where we have several excellent examples. Another favourite of ours are the great white wines from Domaine du Tariquet in Gascogne, which is a great example of a very modern French wine.
One thing to keep in mind with French wines is that they are always made to go with food and especially the regional food. This is true whether it is the robust wines from Cahors and Madiran for the cassoulet that is prevalent near Toulouse or a light Provence rosé such as the Chateau de Pampelonne for the seafood from the French riviera.
The final picture below shows the impressive new winery at Chateau La Lagune, the third growth in Haut-Medoc. This is a perfect example of modernisation while keeping respect for traditions, the wines are every bit as good as they have ever been but the overall quality and consistency has improved significantly.

This 15 ha vineyard is owned and managed by Bertrand Gabriel Vigouroux. The slopes of Calignac, near to Agen (where the prunes come from) are close to the Cahors region. Just as the Cahors wines the vineyard is benefiting from a constant warm wind, which reduces mould forming on the grapes to a bare minimum. The wine consist of a blend of two cabernets and merlot and this combination makes it a uniquely easy drinkable wine. You will definitely enjoy the combination of dark fruits with hints of cinnamon.
