Producer: Cien y Pico
Region: Castilla la Mancha
"Four aspiring wine Knights and some bloody old vineyards" is how Zar Brooks describes Cien y Pico (Hundred & Something). An exciting new producer in Manchuela in south-east Spain - the name refers to the age of the ancient Garnacha Tintorera vines from which the wines are made. The name of the wine refers both to the winemakers behind the wines and the tale of Don Quixote which is based in this area. The wine spent 19 months in barrels of which 85% were new oak and 15% was kept in stainless steel to ensure freshness. A deep, complex wine with hints of chocolate, cinnamon and black pepper mixing with the full on berry fruits and a superb, long finish. The 2007 is the first vintage and went straight to a gold medal at the 2010 International Wine Challenge.
