“You will only be remembered by how good your last bottle of wine tasted” is the Jim Barry motto. Today, his passionate, cricket-mad sons uphold the tradition of powerful flavours and brilliant balance. Jim Barry bought twenty-eight hectares on Benbournie Road in 1964, and this became his first vineyard. It was planted with Cabernet Sauvignon from the beginning, with some Shiraz added later on. (The latter produces Jim Barry’s iconic Armagh bottling.) The grapes for this wine were harvested by hand. A mature, refined Cabernet with a complex bouquet of lifted cedar, menthol, blackcurrant, cigar box, roasted capsicum, nutmeg and marzipan. Soft, supple palate with vibrant fresh fruit balanced with the oak.“This spectacular effort admirably demonstrates what can be achieved in Clare Valley with Cabernet. Gorgeous peppery, minty, black currant, and flowery scents jump from the glass of this inky/purple-hued wine. Full-bodied, powerful, intense, and rich, with notes of roasted meats, dried herbs, and spice, good purity, and a sensational finish, it is accessible now, and should drink well for 15-20 years. 96 points” – The Wine Advocate, October 2006
