Producer: Delas Freres
Many Rhône producers have enjoyed a renaissance in the last decade, and none more so than Delas. The company has history (back to 1836) and land (twelve prime hectares, including La Landonne and Les Bessards). Since 1997, in the form of Jacques Grange, it has also had a winemaker capable of realising all that potential. Under his influence a more modern ‘boutique’ approach has been taken, and the wines now combine clarity of flavour with hedonistic appeal – surely the ultimate goal for a Rhône producer. This wine is produced from grapes grown in the commune of Apt, in the heart of the Côtes-du-Ventoux. The Grenache underwent a traditional vinification in stainless steel vats with daily pumping over; the Syrah was whole-bunch vinified to maximize its contribution to the aroma and fruit of the wine. The components are blended after malolactic and before spending six to eight months in vat to harmonize. Fragrant with strawberry, raspberry and black pepper, an elegant and supple expression of this popular Rhône appellation.
