New Zealand's winemaking maestro Kim Crawford can't seem to lose a trick, his releases attract show awards like a metal detector. This one comes across like a platter of really delicious fruit, crunchy pear and honeyed almonds, peaches all around, viscous like a clear apricot syrup. Crawford has managed to trump the market with his deft handling of Pinot Gris, fashioning a series of exciting Cuvées from good vineyards that specialize in the grape. A truly good food wine to accompany fine gourmandise, and especially suitable to light continental cuisines Proudly laying claim to establishing New Zealand's first virtual winery, winemakers Kim and Erica Crawford like to source the fruit for their distinguished little offerings from well established, premium grape growers around Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay. The source vines for this Pinot Gris were trained to ripen exposed fruit (50 per cent) and shaded fruit (50 per cent). The exposed fruit added weight and mouthfeel and the shaded fruit adds intense aromatics. Select components were hand picked, the balance harvested with great haste at the optimal time of ripeness. A small portion of the wine was barrel fermented for several months, and placed through a spell of partial malolactic fermentation. Colour is a pale straw with hints of green. Aromas of apple and Nashi pear with lifted nutty, butterscotch malo notes. Full and rich on the palate, there's super flavours to this wine that can't be found elsewhere, very peachy on the palate, almost fleshy in colour, with a distinctive aromatic quality that comes very close to concentrated lemon essence. As close to a perfumed palate as one can get without being florid, fresh and easy drinking, a super wine with food, extremely well balanced between fruit and perfect levels of acidity, the sensational partial malolactic fermentation adding complexity. A full bodied Pinot Gris, ideal to have all by itself or with paella and pilafs, asian rice dishes or delicate fish
