Producer: Jim Barry
Region: Clare Valley & Coonawarra
The old Penola cricket ground was located on the southern border of Coonawarra and when it closed in 1996, Jim Barry was quick to purchase the 30 acre property and convert it to a vineyard planted with Cabernet Sauvignon. In true Jim Barry style the original pavillon and cricket pitch has been retained amongst the vines, and is often used when taking a quick break during the harvest. This wine shows inky, deep red colour, with a nose of black cherry, briary fruit and dark chocolate. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with ripe, black cherry and cassis fruit, subtle integrated vanillin oak with mocha richness. The fine-grained texture supports a lingering finish. The wine is harmoniously balanced and can be enjoyed over the next 2-3 years with a hearty beef casserole or a nice rack of lamb.
