Producer: Marchesi Antinori
Tignanello was first produced in 1971 and was one of the first wines to break out of the strict Chianti Classico classification. In many ways it has been a front runner for the enormous quality improvement seen in Tuscany since then and pioneered the use of small oak barrels and introduction of international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Today it is made from a blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet France and interestingly enough, it would now be able resume the Chianti Classico classification that it left in 1975. It has in many ways been the standard bearer for the Antinori family together with its "big brother" from the same estate, Solaia (which we can also get but in very small quantities, contact us for more details). 2004 was a great vintage in Tuscany and this really shows in the Tignanello - lovely, intense ruby colour and complex nose with blackcurrant, spices and herbs and this is followed through on the palate with hints of chocolate on the finish. Plenty of awards for this exceptional wine including 95 points from the Wine Spectator, 93 points from Robert Parker and 3 Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso. Ideally you should wait a few years to enjoy this wine at its best but it is also irresistible now.
