Producer: Tasca d'Almerita
Region: Sicily
Country: Italy
Type: Red

The Rosso del Conte was created by Count Giuseppe Tasca in the 1960s as a special reserve to demonstrate that Nero d'Avola is capable of ageing like other great international red wines. Made exclusively from vines over 40 years old which are cultivated as shrubs and almost unique today in Sicily, this wine is considered the Father of modern Sicilian high-end reds. This is a wine to meditate upon and savour the fruits of the research carried out for many years both in the vineyards and in the cellars of the Regaleali estate. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels of which 80% are new each year. Both the 2003 and 2004 vintages have wone the coveted 3 Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso. A majestic wine which shows already in the deep ruby colour almost turning into purple. A complex bouquet of cherries, vanilla, cinammon, mint, sage and tobacco is followed up by the rich, concentrated fruit on the palate with well balanced tannins and a lovely, long aftertaste. A serious wine that demands serious food such as a perfect rib roast. The wine can be enjoyed now but can equally well be cellared for 5-10 years. 3 glasses in the Gambero Rosso 2009.
