Producer: Grand Marque
Pol Roger recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and is perhaps best known as Winston Churchill's favourite Champagne. The house is still family-owned and has a reputation for producing champagnes of great finesse and elegance which age very well. 1996 is generally considered to be one of the two best vintages of champagne in the 20th century (along with 1928 which only has academic interest), the weather this year being perfect and resulting in grapes that were not only exceptionally ripe but also had very high acidity which is important for making great champagne. The colour is golden and the nose shows a weighty fruit with citrus notes. On the palate a limey character develops with an impressive richness and near perfect balance. This is a Champagne that will develop nicely over the next 5-8 years.
