Producer: Cave des Vignerons du Vallon
Region: Marcillac
Country: France
Type: Red

Les Vignerons du Vallon is a cooperative in a very small area little known to many people situated 165km from Toulouse in the mountains of l'Aveyron. The area suffered from Phylloxera and in 1960 a group of 11 wine makers decided to start all over. In 1966 the wine "Le Marcillac" achieved the status of Vin Délimité de Qualité Supérieure followed by AOC in 1990. The grape is 100% Fer Servado known as just Fer or Mansois in Marcillac. Fer means "iron" as the trunks of the vine are famously hard. Marcillac is the only zone in which Fer is the sole variety permitted. The use of this grape is dying out in Madiran and Gaillac. This exceptional wine is made from grapes from old vines only and kept for 12 months in French oak. The label has changed in the release of the vintage 2005 to appeal to a wider public. The wine is very balanced with real nice complexity of wood and spices. We truly believe having tasted the Marcillac wines that this is undiscovered beauty you should not miss.
