Wines of South Africa

Wines of South Africa We do not need to tell anyone in the UK that South Africa produces a wealth of fantastic wines which are readily available through supermarkets and other wine merchants. Hence we have been concentrating on building up a select collection of wines which stand out and will amaze you. We are listing all the wines of the Goats du Roam Company which is a venture of the Producer Fairview. All wines show a bit of humour and a real twist, but more seriously all the wines are dedicated to a good cause. The Goats du Roam in Villages for example is dedicated to orphanaged children whose parents died of AIDS. Also please be assured these are serious good produced wines with a French blend but a South African terroir. They are really worthwhile trying and good value for money.

Wines of South AfricaWe are listing Hamilton Russell for the above mentioned reasons: Hamilton Russell Vineyards – the most southerly wine estate in Africa and the closest to the sea – is located in the cool, maritime Walker Bay district, in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. The estate specializes in producing highly individual, terroir driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which are widely regarded as the best in South Africa and among the best in the New World. The label pictured here with the Southern Right Whale also produced by Hamilton Russell is very distinctive. The the Southern Right Whales were regarded as the easiest and therefore the ‘right’ whales to hunt in the southern hemisphere. An estimated population of 25,000 off the South African coast was reduced to just 50 in 1935, so it seems good and proper that Hamilton Russell’s specialist Sauvignon and Pinotage ‘offshoot’ is called Southern Right in the whales’ honour, with a percentage of the sale of each bottle going towards their conservation (numbers are now back up to around 2,200).

Buitenverwaching (meaning beyond expectation) and pictured below makes its title come true which is situated in the heart of the historical Constantia Valley in Cape Town, South Africa. Established in 1773 it has flourished as a wine farm, due mainly to the 90 000 vines planted in 1825 by Ryk Arnoldus Cloete, brother of the famous Hendrik Cloete of Constantia. The current owner really benefits from the long history and experience and their wines have received many international awards. .
