Wines of Australia

History of Australian Wine Industry on a stamp We like our Australian Wine in the UK and that is not surprising, before highlighting two of our famous wineries we list a bit of history and Australian Wine Industry facst. Wine was brought to Australia by the early European settlers in the late 18th Century. Within 50 years the first wines of Australia were being produced and sent back to Europe. James Busby often referred to as the father of Australian Wine Industry was a renowned viticulturist. During the early 1830's James Busby toured the wine regions of France and Spain collecting vine stock of many grape varietals. These original grape vine stocks were transferred to Australia and New Zealand by Busby, who became a "British Resident" of the territory. Australia survived most of the phylloxera problems that plagued the wine world in the late 1800's. Only the province of Victoria suffered heavy losses before American root stock could be used to stop the vine disease. Australia's landmass is almost 3 million square miles making it almost as large as the continental United States. Australia's primary wine grapes are Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Savignon. Australia contains more than 1,100 wineries in 26 different wine regions Australia exports more wine than that that is sold domestically. Out of a total of approximately 919 million litres bottled, 516.5 million litres is exported. The largest export market has been the United Kingdom and second has been the United States and in fact the Australian Wine Exports have grown over 700% in the last 15 years.

Yalumba Environmental statement Yalumba listed in the top 10 wineries of Australia is chosen by us not only because of their remarkable wines, but also because of their environmental statement which fits very well with our organic and carbon neutral wines. The winery owner's describe it as follows: "We are convinced that our efforts in protecting our natural resource base have reflected in the quality of the wines we share with the world. Quite simply, excellence in winemaking required excellence in environmental management – the two are inseparable. Our wines now celebrate this fact." Robert Hill Smith, Proprietor". We think that Yalumba is showing the great flexibility of producing very reasonable priced entry wines as well sublime more upmarket wines which fits every budget. Not something many can repeat.

Diana and Kevin Cullen Another really interesting winery we list is the Margaret Cullen Winery South of Perth. It again fits into our Carbon Neutral philosophy and so much so that this one of the few carbon neutral certified wineries. In the early 1960's detailed climatic studies of various regions in Southwestern Australia revealed that during the winegrowing season, Margaret River's climate was similar to that of Bordeaux, particularly Pomerol. The conclusion that Margaret River was ideal for viticulture was first tested in Wilyabrup in 1966, when Diana and Kevin Cullen (here pictured) planted a trial acre of vines. The encouraging results led to the couple planting 18 acres of vines on their sheep and cattle farm in 1971.
